Polymethyl Methacrylate
(Acrylic)
Properties
Acrylic is hard and rigid comparable hardness to aluminium. It maintains its clarity even with thick sections and after long exposures to outside elements. Unfortunately it can be easily scratched by dust, other objects and even cleaning.
This material has high strength but can be brittle. It is UV and weathering resistant but can see crazing appear this can be worsened by detergents, greases and oils. Acrylic attracts dust so an antistatic additive should be added. Because PMMA is clear we can apply a wide range of colours, both solid and translucent. Acrylic is also flammable

Finishing
PMMA mouldings can be bonded using solvents or welded using ultrasonic welding, hot plate and friction. PMMA parts can be machined but can be scratched with incorrect handling.
